Diving Bell Spider (Argyroneta aquatica)

Also known as the water spider, the diving bell spider is a species of spider native to northern/central Europe and northern Asia. The diving bell spider is the only known spider to live its entire live underwater. To accomplish this task the air-breathing diving bell spider traps air bubbles with hairs on its legs/abdomen. The bubbles line its body giving it a silvery appearance and allow it to breath. Females (males build them too but they are smaller)  will build special webs known as “diving bells” which are filled with air and are used for housing, molting, mating and various other tasks, these underwater oases have to be replenished with oxygen everyone and awhile. Diving bell spiders usually inhabit oxygen-rich ponds and feed on small aquatic invertebrates and insects that pass by the bell (males swim for prey as-well).
